Balance and Colored Portals

Hello! Sorry for not posting more frequently!

The testing team has been checking over balance. Things are looking good. πŸ™‚
Taking what we’d been looking at and noting the failures of the system, I added a leveling mechanic to the instability mechanics. Now they can scale better and limit how many times they get added to a world. This means that the system works much better, but it also sets us back some for testing the balance. We need to check over everything again to make sure that this change doesn’t break balance (though for the most part it should improve it). The main concern is that some things may need to be softened a little because they scale now.

While that’s going on I’ve been streaming some things I’ve been working on. If you want to catch me when I do that be sure to subscribe to my twitch channel (http://www.twitch.tv/xcompwiz). I don’t tend to know in advance when I will be streaming!
Last stream we went off on a tangent and played with colored portals. Now every time you place a book in a receptacle it will randomly select a color. That color will be used for the portal it spawns. It’s really quite cool looking. At present there isn’t an in-game way of selecting the color -just picking up and putting down the book again- but there will be a way in the future. πŸ™‚

The stream also saw some bug fixes and some neat particle effects for when you link.

I just added config options for symbol registration. It’s now possible to prevent a symbol from being registered, effectively disabling it. This will remove the symbol from the game but not from ages or notebooks so be careful using it on existing saves! Things will work, but ages, for instance, might have to select a new symbol to replace the lost one.

I’ve got some other things in store for you, as well. I look forward to you getting to see these things and your responses.

Enjoy!

  1. You’re probably going to say no. I play minecraft allot during my free time and i seem to find Glitches and bugs really easily. I was wondering if I could help you test mystcraft and find bugs for you.
if so I would appreciate it allot

  2. Any chance you’ll upload previous streams to Youtube, so those of us who are offline at your streaming times can view them?

    1. darkthought: Previous streams are stored on the twitch.tv site. You can watch them from there. πŸ™‚ Most of them are too large to copy to youtube.

  3. Just wanna say, looking forward to the next release. Read through your posts on here, looked over the MC Forums thread, and watched a few spotlights on the mod, and it’s totally going to be the perfect solution for the server I host.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not asking for updates or being pushy, just wanted to say that your mod sounds damned cool, and I hope development is going well! πŸ™‚

  4. I say open beta testing for all! Honestly, I just can’t help updating to the newest forge version, if that means lots of new fun mods and add-ons, but the lack of Mystcraft hurts. Real, physical pain. And bone-deep sorrow too, of coarse. Inflicting that on us poor gamers…for shame.
I’d take a bug-ridden/unbalanced/world-corrupting updated version over none at all. That’s what back-ups are for!

  5. Ya we really need another build I can’t even put mystcraft on my server as my server was having problems with forage 287 and under I think it was and mystcraft don’t even work on anything higher then like 26* I think it is so that really sucks for me. I got tired of waiting though already started to, put mods on the other day even though mystcraft is really one of the main mods needed mostly for a Mining world so no one is making buildcraft holes in overworld.

Ya you might go and link me to your forum topic like you did the other guy, but that requires posting bugs and as I cant use mystcraft can’t even do that.

    1. Bigdog: The last release of Mystcraft was built against 247, I think, and doesn’t work well on anything higher than 151. The next release won’t have the same limitations. Sorry about this issue. πŸ™‚ Release is soon. πŸ™‚

  6. Yeah, I want open beta too… Perhaps make a big red note “This version is still in an early testing stage and may crash often or show incompatibilities!” over the download link if you don’t want to hear those kids crying “ur mod broke evrythin fix it now u suck!!!1!”

  7. Yeh
Mystcraft (not tied to a forge version) and Red Power are the two mods i am waiting for to set up a new 1.3.2 Server.
So i’ll have to be patient but hope i can set it up in the next 1 – 2 month.
But when it is done i see a lot of fun incoming.

  8. well 1.4 should be released next week so i think you find alot of mods will just hold off for the update

  9. Switching to opensource would speed up the tedious process
of fixing smaller bugs, and keep up with the “resumed” update rate
    that minecraft has resumed now.

    1. It’s not fixing smaller bugs that has slowed down this release, it’s balancing; being opensource wouldn’t make that any easier.

  10. Yeah, I’ve givin up on waiting for RedPower, much as I love the mod, as the Dev refuses to say ANYTHING to ANYONE, so, I’m working the server without it for now. This mod on the other hand, is something I can totally work in at a later point and just explain it as research paying off, and gateways to other worlds being discovered. Also, the Dev here actually talks about it, like he cares, and it doesn’t sound far off from release, so, no worries here πŸ˜‰

  11. Kaylo

I would rather have a stable version of Mystcraft rather than a bug filled unbalanced version. There’s nothing more frustrating than putting something together and having it fail because of bugs. I’ll be patient, it sounds like it’s getting close to being ready anyways.

  12. Can’t wait to see what these “other things” you have in store are. You have an amazing mod, any extra additions will only make it more awesome.

Keep up the good work πŸ™‚

  13. @Sphinx: the only “problem” is that Minecraft 1.4 is scheduled to be released next week, meaning that all of the mods are going to start a new update cycle very soon. This could mean that some of the mods will not be seen at all in a 1.3.2 version.

I really do hope to see Mystcraft released soon too though as i already have a 1.3.2 server running that could use the update (as with the current version we can’t get Railcraft to work alongside Mystcraft)

    Oh, and @XCompWiz:
Thank you for a great mod. This mod is one of the reasons that servers will no longer have to be reset when changes are made to the world generators. Because we can simply make a new age to get the new stuff πŸ™‚

  14. Colored portals:
Should it match the color of the descriptive book?
At the very least, in my opinion, all portals to the same age should have the same color.

  15. Thanks for keeping us up to date on the changes and potential release times. Your mod lets me play without the world generation from other mods that have yet to release (*cough*redpower*cough*) without worries. Keep up the great work! πŸ™‚
